I'm calling it.

Nora's first word is.... "Dog!" How appropriate!

Now, I'm not sure Rich is on board with me about Nora talking, and here's why: Her rendition of "dog" sounds exactly like "Da-da." You have to consider the context to interpret which male member of our household she's talking about.

But when we get home from work/daycare, and we walk up to the back door and I start fumbling with my keys, and Baxter begins barking wildly, and Nora starts bouncing up and down, pointing to the door and saying "Dada!" -- well, that means "doggy." And when she hears Rich come home from work, turns with a bright smile to the sound of his footsteps and says "Dada!" -- then that means "Daddy."

They're homophones, that's all. Or maybe there's some sort of tonal variant, like in Chinese, that my ears aren't picking up on.

The point is, my girl says a word. Now she can name everybody in the house.

Phoebe's first word was dog, too! And, like Nora, she uses meta-words to describe words that seem somewhat in relation. For example, Da-da means Dad. Currently, it can also be used to indicate other men, people who wear glasses... or hairiness --- like how one day in August when she felt the stubble in my armpit and she looked puzzlingly at her dad, then at me, my armpit, back at her dad, and then back to my armpit and queried, "Dada?"
